Earth is Fun

It started with one of my colleagues asking for help in figuring out why his Google Earth wasn’t working properly and then suddenly I got sucked into it. Soon we together located and marked The Forum, our office, my home, my friend’s home, ISCKON temple, Fun World and my sister’s house. Then more of my colleagues joined in and soon we were trying to locate each and everyone’s house. We were successful in most cases but we were unable to locate one particular colleague’s house in Jayanagar 8th block because my knowledge of that area is limited and she was unable to provide any landmarks.

Google Earth is fun for me more than it is for others because I am fascinated with maps. I have five different types of maps of Bangalore and am yet to buy the comprehensive Eicher map that one of my friends has.

Looking Back

When I had to come to Bangalore last year, people warned me that there could be a language problem, you know the whole north-south divide but since my sister was already staying here and that too in an Air Force base, I did not worry about it for a sec.

The first local person who I had to interact with was my sister’s maid and since she spoke English, there was no problem at all. Within the air force base, everybody understood either Hindi or English or both. Even outside the base, I found out that most people understood at least one of the two languages I spoke and when they didn’t, they politely smiled and told me so and in some cases, even directed me to other people who they thought could understand me.

What I did face, however, was culture shock because we were staying on Hesaraghatta Main Road on the outskirts of the city and coming from a centrally located residential neighborhood my whole life, I obviously couldn’t relate to these people. In fact, once my sister asked me to get a pack of Macaroni and I went to a dozen big and small shops asking for it and everyone in these shops seemed puzzled whenever I asked for Macaroni. Nobody had any idea what this thing was. I tried explaining what macaroni looks like but to no avail. A guy at one of the shops thought that maybe I wasn’t pronouncing it properly and that I was actually looking for “Mac roti” (whatever that it).

I did, at occasions, was faced with people who refused to even look at me or listen to me because I didn’t speak their language but these instances were rare and hence by far my experience here has been great. There really is no language problem in Bangalore. (At least, I didn’t face it.)

We Might as Well Be Strangers

I’ve been a fan of Keane ever since I heard (or rather saw) their first single, “Everybody’s Changing” but till a few days ago I had only heard (and seen) their singles and so my liking was limited.
But I found a great download link to a huge collection of their songs (including bonus tracks, remixes and b sides) and I’m completely hooked to all their songs since then.
Keane is simply fantastic. All their songs are magical. In fact, I have started liking them so much that I’ve decided to buy their CD (an honor that I only give to a select few).

The songs that I like the most are “Your Eyes Open”, “She Has No Time”, “Snowed Under”, “We Might as Well Be Strangers”, “Wolf at the Door”, “Somewhere Only We Know”, “This Is the Last Time” and “Allemande”. But actually I like all the other ones too.

I wonder how long this addictive phase will last but I’m a lifetime Keane fan now.

Suggest A Name, Please

My newborn niece is yet to be named and due to astrological reasons, her name should begin with ‘G’. So please suggest good girl names beginning with ‘G’. Good uncommon names starting with other letters are welcome too.
