The Wonder Years

// November 17th, 2007 // 7 Comments » // Happy, Home

As is common knowledge, I am a man with a mission. There’s always something I’m working on. I started my new mission of digitalizing all the old photos lying around the house as soon as I got home. Now, old photos can bring back a lot of memories. Especially yearly class photos from school. These photos helped me recall the names of so many people who I had completely forgotten or so I thought.

But one photo from kindergarten had in it my first crush if we don’t count Sridevi. What? Don’t you judge me! She was a superstar and I was a little kid! Anyways, I don’t even remember the name of my first crush now (Was it Rakshita?) but I do remember that I used to like her and wanted her to sit next to me in the classroom. And one day, my class teacher made her sit next to me which resulted in her crying a lot because she wanted to sit next to her friend. This totally saddened me but not for long. We were 5 after all! We became friends the same day and I don’t remember how long we stayed friends. The next year I moved to a different part of the city and started attending a different school.

Coming back to the present, there’s a new dry fruits store opening this week in Lucknow and its curiously titled “Hey Keshav Its Yours” (Keshav is a guy’s name, in case you didn’t know) .  I have no clue what the name means. Let me know if you do.

I Don’t Like It

It’s never easy to accept the truth especially when the truth is that one is losing interest in blogging. Add to that the fact that one’s swamped with work and what you get is no post for exactly a month!! But lets not talk about it.

  • So my trip to Lucknow on Diwali went well. I spent 2 days in Delhi and just 9 days at home. Diwali night was fun though a little too windy. I took lots of photos out of which 14 pictures are posted on flickr for all of you. Most of those are of Gurgaon (a city I visited for the first time and what a disappointment it was!)
  • I also met some really old school friends back home, thanks to Orkut. For some reason, some of these friends felt really concerned about me because of my last post and suggested that I should obviously get married so that there’s someone to take care of me. The fact that I don’t want to get married anytime soon did not go down very well with them which is weird cos its one thing for such things to come from your parents but from your school friends? It’s totally weird!! And the best part is that my parents don’t even care about me getting married. Few relatives do but my dad knows how to get each and everyone of them to shut it. And my mom doesn’t encourage them as well. That’s why i love my parents! They are non-interfering. Just the kind i like.
  • After the heavy rains last week, I finally decided to buy an umbrella. And know what – it hasn’t rained ever since!!
  • And to end with some good news – if things go as planned, I will finally have my own personal laptop in a little over a week.

The Wait is Over

I once expressed my love for Google Earth and I still love it but I always missed having hi-res images of Lucknow. It’s my hometown after all and a truly amazing city. I even felt hurt when Google added images of Bhopal and Indore cos Lucknow is bigger (and may I say better even though I’ve not been to any of those cities). So imagine my surprise when I installed Google Earth on my new system yesterday morning and noticed that the map of India had a lot of new strips on it, you know, the ones that represent high-res images. Turns out Google did the biggest update ever on 8th June. A lot of Indian cities even the small ones are now available in hi-res.

I was extremely thrilled to finally see Lucknow. I quickly located my home, my school, my college and a lot of other places. I was also surprised to see that the ariel view of Lucknow is a lot better than most Indian cities. There are no big slums or anything and most of the city especially the trans-gomti area (where I live) looks beautiful. It’s heartening to see that large parts of Lucknow are not congested like in big cities. A lot of other cities in UP such as Kanpur, Agra, Bareli, Varanasi, Allahabad, Gorakhpur etc. are also available in high-res. I could even see Mangalore and parts of Mysore.

Coming back to Lucknow, I immediately searched Keyhole Community to see if somebody had uploaded placemarks for Lucknow and I did found one large folder there. But a lot of important places were missing so I decided to do something I had never done. Create a folder of placemarks and upload it. It took me two hours to finally do it. And will take even longer to write a list of all the placemarks and post the KMZ file on the boards.

But all of you can download the KMZ file here. Now I know that most of you may not be interested in it but download the file and watch the places if you have time. Do it for me. You’ll like what you see, I think.

For people who do not use Google Earth, here are a few screenshots of Lucknow.
