Bad Day by Daniel Powter
I had no idea who Daniel Powter was when I saw the video and had it not been for the story going on in the video, I would have changed the channel. My research on the net tells me that he is a new singer from Canada and his first single, “Bad Day” has been a big hit in some European countries. The song is a soft-rock edging on pop and has a very catchy piano tune. The lyrics are fine and Daniel’s voice suits the mood of the song. A good debut.
Album : Daniel Powter
Genre : Rock
My Score : 6.5/10
B.Y.O.B. by System Of A Down
The song begins with the line “Why do they send the poor?” and you know what this song is an anti-war song but then it makes a 180 degrees turn and you have a pop-rock chorus. The song is great irrespective of whether you are a fan of System Of A Down or not (like me). For the uninitiated, B.Y.O.B. stands for Build Your Own Bomb here. A great song.
Album : Mesmerize
Genre : Rock
My Score : 7/10
Main Vari Vari by Kavitha Krishnamurthy & Reena Bharadwaj(singers), A.R. Rahman(music) & Javed Akhtar(lyrics)
From the soundtrack of Mangal Pandey – The Rising, this is a mujra set in 1857. Considering its a mujra, one would expect a certain kind of song but its nothing like that. The song has a magical quality. Kavita Krishnamurthy is in top form and Reena Bharadwaj provides able support. The music is fabulous which is not a surprise considering its a Rahman song but the lyrics by Akhtar also deserve a mention. Easily, one of the best songs of the year so far.
Album : Mangal Pandey – The Rising
Genre : Hindi Soundtrack
My Score : 8.5/10
Halka Halka Sa Yeh Sama by Sonu Nigam(singer) & Pritam(music)
From the new movie Chocolate, this is a very lively song and has a great beat to it. Sonu Nigam breezily sings and the music is pretty good. Overall, a nice feel good number you feel like moving your feet to.
Album : Chocolate
Genre : Hindi Soundtrack
My Score : 6.5/10
